National Hairstylist Appreciation Day: The Hands Behind Every Crown
And why recognition has never been enough, until now.
There are very few relationships in life built on equal parts trust, vulnerability, and “don’t play with my edges.”
If you have textured hair, your hairstylist is one of them.
Because if you know, you know.
A good hairstylist isn’t just someone who gets your part straight or your braids neat. They’re the ones who understand your hair before you even finish explaining it. The ones who clock your new growth, your breakage, your energy. The ones who ask, “What are we doing today?” and somehow also means, “How are you really doing?”
And somehow, by the end of the appointment, your hair is laid… and so is your spirit.
That’s the truth that is ours as clients. But let’s start with the other truth that we don’t say loud enough: in the Afro hair community, it’s not talent that these hairstylists lack.
It’s been recognition.
April 25th is National Hairstylist Appreciation Day, and in the Afro and textured hair community, this day hits different. Because for too long, the conversation around recognition has skipped over the very people shaping how we show up in the world.
So today, we’re making it loud.

The Gap No One Talks About, But Everyone Feels
Here’s a truth worth sitting with: in Canada, you can become a licensed hairstylist without ever learning to work with Afro or textured hair.
No standardized training on coils, kinks, or 4C textures. No requirement to touch a single curl before graduating. And still, clients hear « we don’t do your type of hair » like it’s acceptable.
It isn’t.
There are 1.5 million people of Afro-descendance in Canada. The demand has always been there. The talent has always been there. What’s been missing is the system that recognizes it.
The most skilled Afro hairstylists often learned in living rooms, not classrooms, from their mothers, aunties, cousins, and late-night YouTube sessions. From years of trial, refinement, and a refusal to give up. That knowledge is real. That expertise is a specialty. And it’s time the industry treats it that way.
(Meanwhile, in New York State, a new law now requires textured hair to be part of the core cosmetology curriculum, not optional, mandatory. Canada, we’re watching. When do we catch up?)
What You See. What You Don’t.
The final look is easy to admire, the clean parts, the laid edges, the flawless install. What’s harder to see is everything behind it.
Hours on your feet. Constant learning. Precision work delivered while holding space for a client who needed more than just a style. Your hairstylist is part artist, part entrepreneur, part therapist, part magician, and in a world that still undervalues textured hair expertise, every single appointment takes more intention than it should.
So no, appreciation shouldn’t be a once-a-year event.
But today? We’re starting here.
Reach out after your next appointment. Recommend your stylist to a friend who’s been struggling to find someone who gets it. Show up consistently. Respect their time. Honour their craft.
And if you’re a stylist reading this, this day is yours. Whether you’ve been in the industry for years or you’re just starting out, practicing late at night, figuring it out as you go: we see you.
Why SWAYED Exists
Recognition matters. But it’s not enough on its own.
For too long, incredibly talented Afro and textured hairstylists have had to rely on word-of-mouth, unpredictable algorithms, and platforms that weren’t built with them in mind. Visibility was a hustle. Bookings were inconsistent. And the industry kept moving like they weren’t there.
SWAYED was built to change that.
We created a space where Afro and textured hair is centered, not sidelined. Where your work speaks for itself, regardless of how you learned it. Where clients who need your expertise can actually find you.

And to help you grow beyond the booking, every stylist who signs up unlocks our 5-Day Stylist Growth Series, real, actionable guidance on finding your lane, building your client base, and owning your value. No fluff. No performance. Just the tools to show up with confidence, online and off.
The Sendoff
To every hairstylist who stayed up late perfecting a technique, tried again after a style didn’t land, built something from scratch, or made someone feel like themselves again when they needed it most:
